As talks continue forward on the Union Pacific/Norfolk Southern merger, you can probably say it's a sure thing that the marriage will be approved by the Surface Transportation Board. A merger this big usually takes twelve to eighteen months to go through. The railroad unions have a vote and industry shippers need guarantees that they'll still receive service from the railroads. To counter this alliance, Warren Buffett's BNSF (privately owned) and CSX (NYSE-CSXT) stated they are in a "strategic partnership." It seems to me that Buffett wants to only share his BNSF playing Choo-Choo with the CSX.
